It’s a truism that there can be no kitchen without a kitchen cabinet. And cabinets add a lot of beauty and body to the kitchen; how else do you fill up the space? You need cabinets to stock stuff and to make the kitchen look filled up unless you favor a totally rudimentary kitchen where you cook using firewood and keep utensils on the ground.

A kitchen remodel is a good time to make good use of the kitchen space that has been left unattended and redo the kitchen cabinets. The placement of the cabinets can help you decide on countertop use.

A remodel is also an opportunity to have your cabinets redesigned so that you can fit in large and oddly shaped items such as juicers and blenders. Is there space in a corner for a vertical Lazy Susan cabinet? Adds a slightly different touch to the proceedings and lets you keep a lot of stuff within reach.
Your kitchen cabinets can contribute immensely to the aesthetic of the kitchen. You can choose from a number of textures, finishes, handles, knobs, colors, glass inserts, etc.

When you decide to go for a kitchen remodel, you should know that the costs escalate with the scale of the operation; plan according to the budget and be prepared to spend a little more than that but if you do your homework you will be able to get good value for your time and money.

The success of a home improvement project depends upon working with the right contractor and that can happen only when you’ve done the due diligence on how to find local contractors. Why the stress on local contractors, you may ask. That is because you don’t want to be working with storm chasers that you won’t see again once the job is done and you have a complaint. You want a contractor that has a license to practice in your area, has an office where you can reach him, and will draw up a contract and adhere to it.

There are quite a few ways to look up local contractors. Amongst the sources you can use include Yellow Pages and the internet. Talking to local contractors through references is a good idea because it means that they are being endorsed by another person – the hardware store and people who’ve had work done. If you’re staying in a building then the building management committee will surely have some good references to give you.

The internet has an advantage that you can get a lot of references and compare contractors for quotes. A lot of information about the nature of their business is available on their website. You can check if they are licensed, the address of their office, and how they work. Do they employ skilled labor or sub-contract it. What is the remuneration structure like? It is important to find out if the local contractor is insured or you may be liable to pay damages for accidents that happen on your property. Obtain a copy of a contract from the contractor and go through it; understanding it will give rise to questions that you can ask.

Area listings on the internet are carried by many sites. Check them out. You will surely come across local contractors that are potentially a good fit for the kind of remodeling you have in mind.

Home remodeling can be as exhaustive an exercise as you want to be. Factors that affect a remodel include the rooms, their sizes, materials considered, areas of the rooms to be remodeled, and of course the budget as well.

Here are some cool remodeling ideas that will add value to your property and make you feel good about it as well –

Burglar alarm – Consider having a burglar alarm installed. It can not only save you from losing valuables it can actually protect your life. A lot many burglaries are armed break-ins and desperate thieves won’t think twice before shooting their way out of a situation. There is also the added advantage of paying less on your monthly home insurance premium. Check if the burglar alarm can trigger of information on a grid that informs police.

Laminate flooring – If you’re looking for durable flooring that costs less and installs quickly, then you cannot go wrong with laminate flooring. It is available in a wide range of styles and textures for you to choose from. This flooring is easy to clean, it does not fade or stain like wood does and of course, as mentioned above it costs less than tile or wood.

Aluminum siding – Aluminum siding on the exterior walls will free you from the worry of painting your exterior walls every few years. The siding is lightweight, available in a range of colors, and will repay its costs fast. This it does by helping you with the heating and cooling costs because of the good insulation properties of the material.

Cabinet refacing – A truly budget remodel idea for the kitchen; the results belie the cost input. You can give your kitchen a new look for very little. Refacing is much cheaper than remodeling. Just replace the drawer fronts and cabinet doors along with the handles. This is it.

Shingles along with thatch have been amongst the oldest and still in use roofing materials. Earlier, it used to be wood shingles. Now you can choose from wood, slate, asphalt, and other materials. The most commonly used shingles material today is asphalt. Let us learn a little bit about these materials.

Asphalt shingles – These shingles are primarily of two types – organic and glass fiber. Organic asphalt shingles are made of waste paper saturated with asphalt. Fiberglass shingles have this material coated with asphalt after the fibers are bonded using a resin. These days laminated shingles are becoming popular; they are heavier and resistant to wind shear. These shingles are durable but vulnerable to thermal shock and constant exposure to water.

Wood shingles – These shingles are old as a concept and lend themselves to several roofing patterns. When made from split wood, these shingles are known as shakes. Shingles can be made from a variety of wood depending upon the local tree types available but the shingles are invariably made from the heartwood that is more durable than the sapwood. Scandinavia and European countries favor wood shingles while asphalt shingles are popular in America. Wood is a fire hazard and can chip as well as rot; on the flip side it is light and abundantly available. Factory-produced wood shingles are easy to replace.

Slate shingles – These shingles offer the advantage of durability. They are made from slate and used in places where this stone is quarried. Transportation adds to the cost of slate shingles. Almost all of the natural slate used for roofing in Europe comes from Spain; this slate is the same that kids use to write on.

A remodeling contractor is going to play a central role in your home remodeling project once you’ve decided to go with one. The question is how do you decide upon a good remodeling contractor. There are a few things that you can do to judge remodeling contractors.

First you need to know what your broad remodeling objective is; do you want the kitchen remodeled and the basement redone or a little bit of everything over the entire house. This understanding will influence your choice of remodeling contractors because it pays to go in with a specialist. A roofing remodeling is handled best by a contractor with the necessary experience under his belt.

Once you have short listed a few remodeling contractors based on recommendations, it is time to take things forward with each one of them –

•	With the homework you have done previously you can ask the contractor about what would be the best remodeling options for your situation given your budget and creative desires. You will get a feel of what he’s talking about if you have done some research.
•	Ask if the contractor has any complaints against him. This can be corroborated by the Better Business Bureau as well. If you find that a contractor has complaints that you’d rather not want to face then you know what to do. Stay away from them.
•	When you meet a remodeling contractor face to face be prepared with questions to ask so that you know you’ll be able to handle whatever is entered into the contract that both parties will ultimately sign on.
•	Needless to say but the contractor has to be properly insured and also licensed. If not, then you are responsible for any trouble that happens later on. This is very important due diligence.

A small bathroom remodel is a challenge to a remodeler’s and home owner’s creativity. You want all the amenities that you can get and you want to use them without bumping into something. You don’t want to weave your way past cabinets and counter-tops, you want space, you want good lighting, you want natural light, and you want the area to look spacious.

Can it be achieved? Yes, it can. With proper designing and implementing a good layout you can get a spacious, functional area in a small space. Here is some food for thought if you wish to remodel a small bathroom.

You need windows for natural lights. Go for small windows that let in natural light. Don’t use heavy curtains on them. Use light blinds.

Do what you can to get in stuff stored in cabinets without using big cabinets. Make use of corners; install cabinets in the corners at a decent height. Usually there is little competition for corner space. You can have a clothes hangar behind the door for hanging clothes meant for washing; a basket hanging in a corner can also serve the same purpose. Is it possible to have recesses in the walls for cabinets and shelves? Consider using longer shelves having optimum depth so that they don’t protrude out.

There are quite a few things that you can do to give your bathroom the effect of space. Large floor tiles are better than small ones. White, sand, and beige are good color choices. Vertical tiled or a painted striped wall gives the impression of length. Ensure bright lighting by placing the tube lights or bulbs strategically. Recessed lighting is a no-no for a bathroom.

Make common sense changes; take out the larger bathtub and replace it with a smaller one. Take out the bathtub if you can live without one. That’s a lot of space saving in one go. Install a bathroom shower. Here too you can save by just having a shower mounted on the wall instead of having a cubicle built for it.

TThe importance of a structurally sound roof cannot be overstated. A well-made roof is as important as the foundation on which your house rests. A faulty roof will have you putting in money into repair jobs that just keep coming up. Gutters not working and leaky roofs will hurt the walls and even the basement area. A properly constructed or remodeled roof will last for years to come. This is why it is important to hand over the roof repair or roof building job to a contractor who knows what he is doing.

A lay person is not informed enough to judge a roofing contractor on his work; which is why you need to exercise the necessary due diligence. How do you do this? First you draw up a list of all the contractors that you want to check out. A search on the internet is one way to go. You can also get quotes online. But these quotes are not to be fully relied on; this is because unless and until contractor sees what he has to work on, he cannot be completely sure of what to charge.

It is of paramount importance that the contractor be licensed and insured. If he is not licensed then it can be difficult to pin responsibility or accountability; a licensed contractor has earned his license and will want to keep it. A contractor that is insured will absorb the cost of an accident, you won’t be held liable for accidents on your premises. An uninsured contractor can cause you a major expenditure that is totally avoidable and for no fault of yours.

Customer references are the next step. Go and meet people who have had work done by a roofing contractor company. They will give you insight on aspects of the contractor’s work. What is the complaint redress mechanism in place? How are payments to be made?

There are many different types of roofing materials to choose from depending upon your region, budget, and construction type. Thatch is traditional material that has been used for thousands of years. It is basically straw derived from sources such as wheat stalks, rye stalks, seaweed, different grasses, etc. The advantages with thatching are that it is light and hence the supporting structures don’t have to be very strong. You can thatch a roof of any shape. However, it is a labor intensive job. Thatch is a good insulating material and hence can keep a property warm in winter and cool in summer. The rate at which precipitation flows down depends on the gradient of the roof slope.

Shingles are perhaps next to thatch when we talk of roofing materials that have been used for a long time. Traditionally, shingles or shakes as they are called in America, have been made of wood. They can also be made by baking mud but are then referred to as tiles, tiles are brittle and can break but will not rot like wood. Today bitumen soaked paper with asphalt aggregate is the most commonly used type of shingle used. Wood has the drawback of being a fire hazard. However, shingles age and this causes them to shrink leading to gaps appearing and leakages taking place.

Slate is a mineral, a stone to be exact. It is fireproof and electricity proof. It is durable and can last for a 100 years. The slate tiles can be hooked or nailed on to the surface below. Hooking is preferred because of the low openings at the lower end hence high resistance to wind. Slate is heavier than thatch, so the underlying beams have to be strong.

Rubber membranes can also be used. They are lightweight and easy to install but can be punctured. These roofing materials are mainly used for commercial establishments.

If you are planning on a home remodel then you will almost necessarily require the services of a general contractor. He’s the guy who’s got all aspects of construction covered. These include painting, carpentry, plumbing, kitchen work, bathroom remodeling, everything. With general contractors involved, you don’t have to worry about interacting with the multitude of sub-contractors, you hire this guy and he takes care of everything. At least, that is the theory.

But what do you don’t want is a general contractor who does not quite know his job, is not licensed, is shoddy, not insured, is an out and out storm chaser…in other words he is unreliable. You need value for the money you spend and this can come only when you hire a general contractor after due diligence. There are serious savings to be had when you work with a good general contractor. In fact, you can get all the hardware purchased from the general contractor’s stock at a discounted rate. On the other hand, get stuck with the wrong type and you will lose money.

Avoid amateurs, that is, general contractors with insufficient experience for the kind of job you have in mind. You can get an idea of the contractor’s capability by taking a look at the jobs he has done, you can visit the sites and see for yourself. Consider interviewing the general contractor, check out more than one. Have your questions ready. Remember to get everything down in writing so that there is clarity and understanding on both sides. This way, the builder cannot renege on his promise.
